Why I Moved to Codeberg

GitHub is fine technically. That's not why I left.

As Linux users we make principled choices constantly — we chose Linux over Windows, FOSS over proprietary, self-hosting over cloud dependence. Hosting FOSS projects on a Microsoft-owned proprietary platform was always a contradiction I kept ignoring.

Three things made it unavoidable:

They treated our code as their product. Copilot was trained on public repositories opt-out, not opt-in. Microsoft assumed permission rather than asking for it.

The governance will never align with us. GitHub's policies serve shareholders. That won't change.

A better option exists. Codeberg is a registered non-profit in Germany, runs on Forgejo (fully open source), no premium tiers, no data monetization, community-governed.

GitLab is better than GitHub but still VC-backed and AWS-hosted. Codeberg removes the profit motive entirely.

I keep GitHub as a mirror for discoverability. Primary development happens on Codeberg. The migration was straightforward and I haven't missed anything.
